Give Now - Change Lives

A Heartbreaking Reality

In Seattle,13% of the homeless population identify as African American despite making up just 7% of the city’s total residents. These families deserve a roof over their heads and a safe space to start their new future.

From Shelter to Success: A Story of Hope

Imagine arriving in Seattle with nothing but a few belongings and an unshakeable dream. This was Abrehet and Tekle's reality when they fled Ethiopia in 2010 with their children – spending ninety long nights in a shelter, uncertain if they'd ever find a true home.

But then everything changed.

Through FAME-EAW's Monica's Village, they discovered more than just four walls and a roof. They found a community that believed in them, mentors who championed their dreams, and a foundation to rebuild their lives.

"The moment we walked into Monica's Village, the weight of fear lifted from our shoulders," Tekle remembers, his eyes bright with gratitude. "The staff didn't just give us housing – they gave us courage. They taught us to believe in ourselves again. There are no words big enough to capture what they've done for us."

Within the embrace of their new community, Abrehet's entrepreneurial spirit blossomed. Tekle pursued his education with renewed purpose. Today, the aroma of traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean dishes fills their own restaurant, Sunset Café – a dream that once seemed impossible now serves as a beacon of hope for other refugees walking the path they once traveled.

From sleeping in shelter beds to owning their own home and business, Abrehet and Tekle's transformation illuminates the miracle that happens when stable housing meets unwavering support. Their story embodies FAME-EAW's sacred mission: lifting Black families from uncertainty to stability, from survival to success.
